This week at the movies: Amy Schumer’s big screen debut and Paul Rudd’s debut as a superhero.

Trainwreck

America’s current “it girl,” Amy Schumer gets her first big feature film. Known for her bawdy stand-up comedy and her TV show “Inside Amy Schumer,” she pairs up with Judd Apatow (the man behind The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Bridesmaids) for Trainwreck, a rom-com where the girl meets her dream man (Bill Hader), but, because she’s got “issues,” resists settling down.

Perfect For: You like saucy, sexy comedies with the hottest comedian working the circuit. (Not for the children.)

What the Critics Say: Good, if more conventional than you’d expect. Writes Entertainment Weekly: “Beneath all of his bad-boy shtick, Apatow's always been a pretty conventional moralist. But Schumer gives their raunchy rom-com enough of her signature spikiness to prevent it from ever feeling predictable.” Says Slate: “[Schumer] takes the romantic-comedy heroine and the onscreen treatment of feminism to places they've seldom, if ever, been before.”

Our Take: Um, first in line!

Ant-Man

In the mold of Guardians of the Galaxy, with its self-effacing, unlikely superhero, comes Ant-Man, starring the most non-superhero star ever, Paul Rudd. Adorable, ageless, super charming, Rudd is perfect to be an ant-sized superhero, able to shrink down to size and back up at will. The Marvel story is essentially about a heist: Rudd is recruited by Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) to prevent the technology used to become Ant-Man from being used for evil purposes.

Perfect For: You like a little comedy in your super hero stories. (See also: Guardians of the Galaxy).

What the Critics Say: Solid fun. Writes the New York Times: “Like "Guardians of the Galaxy," last year's off-brand Marvel hit, "Ant-Man" dabbles in the bright, playful colors of the superhero spectrum, reveling in moments of cartoonish whimsy and smirky humor.” And says the Los Angeles Times: “You can't have a good Ant-Man movie without a good Ant-Man, and in the genial and charming everyman Paul Rudd, the filmmakers have done it right.”

Our Take: Rudd is our kind of superhero, so yes.
