Embracing the Color Yellow

You had me at yellow…

Summer is the time of year when nature comes back to life. But what about your wardrobe? The perfect solution is to inject a little yellow. And if you’re thinking, “Yellow isn’t for me! I don’t want to look like a banana,” hear me out, because yellow certainly can work for you.

Yellow Separates

Floral prints are everywhere this time of year, and a lot them feature your new favorite color. A citron floral cardigan can be the centerpiece of any outfit, with jeans and a white top or a dark blue skirt for work. If a busy print isn’t for you, what about a solid yellow hue? Wear a bright shirt and go neutral with everything else. Perhaps a more audacious choice is to choose some yellow pants. Pairing bright yellow pants with a dark blue button-down is a classic match, but why not try an equally bright pink top. Summer fashion is supposed to be daring, and what could be more daring than combining bright colors?

All Yellow

Going head-to-toe in any color makes you stand out, but especially if that color is yellow. This isn’t just speculation. It’s science. In nature, yellow is the most common color for flowers because the color makes them stand out brightly, allowing the flowers to survive. If you want to go all in for a yellow outfit, you need to pay attention to the details. A nice pair of shoes (think blue deck shoe or black pump), complementary earrings, a detailed watch and even a patterned scarf can pull everything together. To complete the outfit, consider a darker-colored chunky necklace to break up the singular color.

Mellow Forms of Yellow

There are so many choices and variations for yellow that won’t make you look like Big Bird. A hint of citron, mustard, or even gold can be quite striking. Try a bright yellow pair of sunglasses to shade from the sun. Complement your dark blue, crimson and white outfits with an aureolin necklace or a chartreuse bracelet. Completing your summery look means finding one yellow accessory to tie everything together.

Be brave! Make a statement! There is no reason to fear yellow. I think it was President Franklin Delano Roosevelt who once said, “The only thing we have to fear is staining our new canary pants with that delicious piece of pizza.” (I’m paraphrasing).
