Hats are most women’s least favorite winter accessories, and we often risk our ears freezing before donning one. Not only are they often bulky and itchy, they are also responsible for the dreaded “hat head” and those static-y flyaways. But try this season’s new toppers on for size and you’ll be sure to turn heads.
Beanie
Beanies are everyone’s go-to cold weather hat. They require minimal styling and pair well with almost every outfit – try topping off an all-black ensemble with a bright orange beanie for a pop of color! Beanies look best when they’re a bit slouchy, and be sure to leave at least a few strands of hair loose, à la Taylor Swift. If you’re not a fan of trucker hats, a beanie with knitted earflaps is a comfy alternative.
Floppy Hat
Wide-brimmed, felt floppy hats are perfect for fall, but a wool version can be worn well into winter. A camel-colored one softens up an edgy, leather-jacket look, while a black one looks chic with a white blazer; it elevates the homeliest of winter ensembles. But if a floppy hat is too ladylike for your taste, don a fedora, or a Panama hat, which, unlike a man’s, is perfectly appropriate to keep on indoors.
Beret
You can rarely fault a French woman’s style, so it’s no surprise that berets are making a splash stateside. The classic hat was spotted all over the fall runways; Kendall Jenner even sported a studded one at Marc by Marc Jacobs. They key is not to pull it down over your ears, but rather, let is sit atop your ’do, leaning a bit to one side. Unlike beanies, berets look best in neutral, classic hues from navy to pastel pink, but pom-pom-topped ones are fun, too.
As with many accessories, one’s face shape and hairstyle play a role in what hat will look good, so try each style on for size before stepping out into the cold.
